The Experiment Begins

in

Many internet users strive to achieve fame, whilst many others attain fame by accident. A brief look at mainstream reality television will show you that fame is attainable by anyone, regardless of talent.

Welcome to the Fame Experiment! This isn't a reality show, there's nothing particularly special about anyone who takes part in the experiment, but we're all interested in one thing, the power of the internet to generate fame. We're investigating the answer to one simple question:

Can the internet be used to generate enough exposure for one person to experience public recognition?

It works on the idea that one person, if seen over and over again in a multitude of places, could experience public recognition, or become “famous”. The aim is for this person’s image to be everywhere, and for that image to become embedded in internet users’ thoughts so that to see this person in public will trigger an “I know you” moment.

The Fame Experiment will investigate society’s response to the internet - is the internet a separate social entity, or has it become entangled and ingrained in our daily human interaction?

It won’t necessarily be easy, and will require a joint effort over two phases:

Phase 1 is about getting the word out about the Fame Experiment. If you have a website, a blog, post on forums, or even email others, it is easy to participate.

By selecting the Earn Fame Points link after logging in, you will be given a choice of special code that you can place on your website, blog, forum or email signature. These links will generate an image linking to the Fame Experiment website, that when clicked on by others, will add to your Fame Points. These points contribute to the final selection of the subject.

Phase 2 involves publicizing the selected subject to the large network of sites participating in the experiment.

From the moment the second phase begins, all images displayed on these sites will be changed to include an image of the selected subject, with a link back to the Fame Experiment where the subject's profile will be featured. During this phase, the subject will be encouraged to investigate any difference in public perception, and reflect upon this on their Fame Experiment blog.

Any clicks earnt during Phase 2 will be considerably higher than usual and contibute to a likely second experiment.

The concept is simple enough, but the contribution from you is what's most important. Begin right now by registering and we'll see what will be discovered!

How much longer until Phase 2?

It's going to be a little while longer, the outreach of websites using the Fame Experiment images isn't quite large enough.

im looking forward to seeing who wins this contest, i wonder who will actually win, i wonder if people will go into shops and be recognised, its obviously not going to be about the kinda fame papz go after, but who knows, this could change peoples lives man. its always nice to be recognised, i know your probally think im going a bit over the top, but for people like me, this could go to people who have always been told no1 likes you etc. so yes i agree id like to see how much this competition grows :)

The Internet uncovers all aspects of society.
It even exploits the ones that show how we as
Americans are suckers for the apology.

I was quoted saying this on the MSNBC web blog
the "Daily Nightly."

The Sorry List - (http://www.thesorrylist.com) was designed
to show the occurrences that bare this theory out.

The Art of the Apology ... or the decay of morals.

As a network evangelist from Norway, I just love to make friends all over the world. I'm not that concerned about being famous, but I do believe in that sharing knowledge will break down religious, cultural and other barriers. That's why I say: 'Make Blogs, not Wars' and 'Blogging connecting People'.

So I think this is an interesting experiment as it combines the interactive web 2.0 in FaceBook with blogsphere. I'm looking forward to see how it grows and where it will take me as a power networker.
